How is property valued for tax purposes?
All property is valued annually on January 1st. Most property is valued based on the fair market value. Exceptions are land devoted to agriculture which is valued according to current use; commercial and industrial machinery are valued based on a formula set forth in Kansas laws.

Why does the value change?
The Appraiser's Office monitors sales within the county continually throughout the year. The value of your property can change each year depending on several things.
1. If you made any improvements, such as adding a room or garage, the value will go up.
2. If a major structural problem develops, such as a foundation crack that is visible from the outside or pointed out at the time of the appraiser's visit, the value will go down.
3. A downtrend in sales of similar properties can also effect your value. If sales are rising, property values will also rise.

What are the requirements to be a candidate for election?
Candidates must be registered to vote, must have been full-time residents of the county for at least one year prior to qualifying.

When may I begin raising campaign funds?
A potential candidate may begin raising funds at any time after filing designation of a campaign treasurer and bank designation with the County Clerk. The campaign account must be separate from any personal accounts and used only for depositing campaign funds and making campaign expenditures.

Where can I get the address for my new residence?
If you are outside the city limits and built a house on property that was previously vacant chances are there is no address for this new residence. Call the Road & Bridge Department at 620-356-4837 and ask for Loren Wright, County Surveyor.

Where can I get the address for an upcoming home foreclosure?
There are two places that you can research for the address. The Clerk of the District Court (620)356-1526 would maintain the court file and the County Register of Deeds(620)356-1538 can provide the homeowner's name and the legal description.

When are visiting hours for the jail?
Visiting hours are from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm every Sunday.

You must be 18 years old or accompanied by a parent or guardian.

You can get a copy of your driving record with your driver license, $5.00 and appearing at the
Law Enforcement Center.

How can I obtain a background check on myself or a potential employee?
Background checks are processed through the
Kansas Bureau of Investigations.
