GRANT COUNTY CEMETERY DISTRICT

MEETING MINUTES

July 29, 2013

MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Darrin Figgins, Vice-Chairman Cecil Simpson, and Members Ronald Craft and David Schell.

MEMBERS ABSENT: Kathy Olson

STAFF PRESENT: Sexton Bernard LaFever and Secretary Paula Shapland

PUBLIC PRESENT: None

The Cemetery Board met at the Ulysses Cemetery for the purpose of updating the regulations for decorations at the cemeteries.  Board members walked through the cemetery and discussed maintenance issues caused by decorations on gravesites.  The current policy is vague and the goal is to give lot holders a better guideline for acceptable decorations.   Some of the issues are small plaques, figurines, etc. that have blown over and must be picked up, paving stones extending over on another space, veteran crosses, solar lights, shepherd hooks, wind chimes, etc. that are placed away from the headstone, benches without bases and placing items without notifying the Sexton.  There have also been complaints about the clutter in the cemetery and complaints about decorations being removed without notice.  The Sexton is concerned about the amount of time it takes to move items while weed eating and mowing and also the additional work due to space between the headstone and miscellaneous decorations.  Hiring additional help was discussed.

Following discussion, it was decided to keep the same policy with additional wording to limit placement of decorations and require notification prior to placing permanent decorations.  The policy will be discussed at the upcoming meeting on August 9, 2013.

The board discussed making sure the water is drained at the south end of the cemetery and weed removal in the streets.

The Sexton showed the board the irrigation water filtering problems they are having.

The Board toured the new building with the Sexton.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 a.m.
